The Assignment: 

• Create a prototype device to automate a specific chemical reaction.

  • The reaction is an important step in Expansion Microscopy, but is difficult to perform without training.

What I did: 

• Automation Engineering Intern responsible for the device's mechanical and automation design.

  • Designed and built complete prototypes including:

    • Fluid handling, wiring, CNC-machined parts, and a touchscreen web-app interface

  • Took the device from concept to working hardware and wrote the supporting technical documentation.

• Helped bring on two engineers to continue the work as I moved into a consulting role.

  • Continued advising on design direction while working at Curtiss-Wright.

The Result: 

• Personally designed and built two complete prototypes.

• The product's current design is still based on the system architecture I developed.

  • Four alpha test units now in production.

• Demonstrated my prototype during a visit from Nikon representatives.
